MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The USS Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, will be dismantled in Mobile, Alabama, according to The National Interest.
Constructed in 1958, the Enterprise served as a naval flagship for decades, symbolizing America’s global naval dominance until it was decommissioned in 2012.
Now, the Port City will be the final port of the atomic aircraft carrier. The ship’s nuclear reactor has already been decommissioned and the fuel removed. Any hazardous material, including radioactive waste, will be disposed of properly.
The big budget for dismantling “The Big E” runs $536.7 million. The project is expected to wrap up in November 2029.
