BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- It’s the first week of June...the first full week since school has been out for most kids, and that can mean only one thing.

Snow cones! Shaved ice and slurpies...in their most primitive, non-corporate form. You see the one-person, kiosk-style huts all over Kern County.

How many, you ask? At least 21.

That’s counting only county-permitted businesses, both stationary and mobile, that have the word snow or ice in their name. They’re all buzzing now, and they’ll only buzz more as the temperature creeps closer to triple digits.

The line was short but steady at the shaved ice stand, known as the Sno Shack, in northwest Bakersfield, at Coffee and Hageman roads.
