CAMERON PARISH, La. (KPLC) - Hurricanes Laura and Delta ripped miles of marsh apart when they made landfall. Now, volunteers in Cameron Parish are building back one plug at a time.

It was a smelly, muddy, and slightly breezy day for dozens of volunteers in Cameron Parish. Melissa Fusilier said she didn’t mind it because it brought her to the water.

“I mean, I could just take the boat, sit on a boat, and be content. This is me out here, catching some Zen, catching some me time, and doing good with it,” Fusilier said.

Volunteers will plant up to 10,000 plugs of marsh grass this weekend. Organizers said this is all part of the recovery from years of hurricanes that transformed the landscape from bountiful marshland to open water.

Gardner Goodall was the marsh planting guru for the group.
