The Pirates opened their weekend home series against the Phillies on Friday evening with a dramatic 5-4 win thanks to a walk-off sacrifice fly from Nick Gonzales in the bottom of the ninth inning. David Bednar was the game’s winning pitcher, improving to 1-4 on the season. Jordan Romano suffered the loss, falling to 0-3 on the year.
The Phillies opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, thanks to a groundout from Nick Castellanos that plated leadoff hitter Trea Turner. The Pirates responded in the bottom half, tying the game at one when Bryan Reynolds drove home Gonzales, who tripled the prior at-bat.
The back-and-forth continued as the game progressed. Alec Bohm’s RBI single in the top of the third was matched by a Reynolds solo homer in the bottom half, tying the game at two.
