CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The efforts to stop gun violence are ongoing. In fact, Mecklenburg County Commissioner Vilma Leake talked about the emotional pain as well as the financial strain gun crimes have on the community.
One organization's leader hopes her effort can help curb the growing trend.
Friday is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. On Saturday, one woman is hosting a Walk a Mile in My Shoes event at the West Charlotte Recreation Center at 11:00 a.m. Jakie Lewis started this walk to raise awareness after her son and grandson were killed to gun violence.
Lewis spoke with WCNC Charlotte as she lit a candle to honor her son and grandson killed in separate shootings, back to back.
“My son broke up a fight, two juveniles," she recalled. "The young man stated he would come back and kill h
