LA CROSSE - Central Wisconsin’s high school track stars made their presence felt on Day 1 of the WIAA state track and field championships on Friday, June 6 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.

Many area athletes walked away with medals after defining performances, while other performances were validated with qualifications to compete in Day 2's events for a medal.

Here is a look at how the athletes around the area fared at the peak of state track competition.

Division 1:

D.C. Everest's Elaina Kamke earned a Day 2 qualification with a top 10 finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Wausau West’s Maci Heise earned a first-place finish in 300-meter hurdles and a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter run earning Day 2 qualifications in both races.

Marshfield’s Ethan Knecht earned a fifth-pl
