PORTLAND, Ore. — A second asylum seeker in Oregon has been detained using the same playbook as with a transgender woman seeking asylum 's immediate arrest outside a Portland courtroom after an immigration hearing.

The Innovation Law Lab has filed another habeas corpus petition, challenging the Thursday arrest of a 24-year-old man identified only as Y-Z-L-H .

According to court documents , Y-Z-L-H came to the U.S. in 2023 after an infamous cartel, La Familia Michoacana, threatened to kill him. Tipped off by friends, Y-Z-L-H left Mexico and was paroled into the U.S. on July 21, 2023.

Almost a year ago, he applied for asylum and has been living in Newport, Oregon. He was granted work authorization, which is valid through July 19 of this year.
