BARCO, N.C. — One Currituck County High School student's graduation is even more special than he could have imagined, because it proves that the human spirit can't be broken.

"He's a quiet warrior. He will be in recovery for as long as it takes," said Lori Spinato.

This is how Spinato describes her 18-year-old son Luke, who, last year, was having a fun summer day with friends and family on July 4 — when his life changed forever.

Just weeks before the start of his senior year at Currituck County High School, Spinato broke his neck in a diving accident, sustaining a spinal cord injury that paralyzed him from the chest down.
