IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - “I’m terrified for people in crisis in our community,” said Shelter House Director of Development Christine Hayes.

That’s what one leader of a homeless services nonprofit had to say about the proposed cuts to Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act includes a 44% cut to HUD. Hayes said it took years to get to a point where they could have a positive impact on finding homes for people struggling to find affordable housing. Federal funding is the biggest piece of Shelter House’s budget, and cuts like this will drive up homelessness in Iowa.
