BANKS, Ore. — The clock is ticking to find millions of dollars to preserve a part of Bank's history: the 1920 Union High School.

"This is our town's only prominent, historic brick building," explained Nina Shurts of the Banks Historical Society.

She's the one who started the campaign to try and save the building after the school board said it's moving forward with demolishing it to make way for a new school. The move has financial support from a $49 million bond measure that passed last year.

"The wording in the bond was such that it was not apparent that the historic 1920 building would be coming down," Shurts said. "It caught us by surprise."

And if the building is lost: "I just think it would be a sad day for this community. And it's something you can't get back."
