New Mexico’s immigrant populations started feeling the effects of President Donald Trump’s second term in office the moment it started, says youth organizer Guillermo Palacios.

The 23-year-old, himself an immigrant from Chihuahua who works in Central New Mexico schools to help build leadership and organizing skills among young immigrants and others, said he spent the days following Trump’s inauguration thinking of little else besides the impact the new administration would have on his community.

When he walked into his first meeting with students at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School just outside of Albuquerque, the sense of dread was palpable there too, with many worrying even then that they could face being separated from their loved ones.
