Millions of patients will receive test results, book appointments and order prescriptions via their phones under a massive revamp and rollout of the NHS App, which is set to become “the front door to the health service”.

The £50m upgrade is part of a long-awaited 10-year plan for the health service which aims to modernise and streamline the NHS .

The NHS app will become the first port of call for patients to interact with the health service in a bid to empower people to take ownership of their healthcare and reduce missed appointments and long waiting lists.

For those using the app, letters will become a “last resort” in hopes of saving £200mn over the next three years currently spent on sending 50 million letters to patients.
