While the weather is warming up now, cold weather in the previous weeks has delayed the growth of local strawberries.

Quinte News spoke to Loraine Cheer, from Cheer Farms, about their upcoming crop of strawberries. She said that they used row covers to protect their berries when the weather turned.

“We need the heat to get them growing, there’s not a lot of foliage to them and that’s what we need,” said Cheer. “There seems to be lots of berries there. But it’s slow, because we’ve had so much rain and so much cold that they’re just kind of stunted.”

While the upcoming harvest may have been pushed back slightly, the strawberries are still growing. While the exact timeline is unpredictable and weather-dependant, they are expected to be available by Father’s Day.
