A doctor now gets her boyfriend to open tins for her - after severing an artery in her thumb on rice pudding and turning her kitchen into a bloodbath. Jean Carroll, a neuroscientist, decided to indulge in a post-meal dessert last year when she suffered a severe injury to her right thumb.

The 40-year-old was opening a tin of Ambrosia Rice Pudding with a can opener when she sliced the base of her thumb against the sharp ridge of the dessert container. ‌
