A vast swathe of England and Wales will be hit by thunder, lightning and torrential rain as a disruptive weather system sweeps in from the West on Saturday before a warm spell returns.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across parts of central and southern England and Wales, with up to 40mm of rain expected in places, alongside strong winds, frequent lightning and hail.

It is expected to make driving conditions difficult and could cause delays to public transport. There is also potential for some short-term loss of power in some places.

The weather warning comes into effect from 9am on Saturday and is expected to be in place until 6pm.
