Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Friday at 9:34 a.m., on Route 16 near the intersection with Old Prater Road in Smyth County.

A Toyota Scion was travelling eastbound on Route 16 when it crossed the centerline. A Dodge Ram 2500 travelling westbound on Route 16 tried to avoid the Scion, but the Scion struck the Dodge Ram 2500 head-on, according to a written statement.

The driver of the Scion died at the scene. Identification is still pending.

The driver of the Dodge was taken to Smyth County Hospital with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
