GREENSBORO — Guilford College has reached an agreement with the Piedmont Land Conservancy to protect about 120 acres of land and provide the cash-strapped college millions of dollars.

The agreement means the swath of land known as Guilford Woods, which is tied to the Revolutionary War and Underground Railroad, can never be developed.

The organization will need to raise about $8.5 million for the project, which is separate from the college’s $5 million campaign to help keep its doors open.

“We’re leaving a breathing space in the middle of the city or at least this part of the city,” said Interim Guilford College President Jean Bordewich.
