ON THIS DAY IN 1885 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “There is always a large attendance at the races at Jerome Park when either of the two classic events, the Withers and Belmont, are to be decided. Yesterday was Belmont day and a larger gathering of people has seldom been within the gates of this beautiful park. The club house was crowded with the members of the association and their lady friends. On the lawn were several hundred people and four or five four-in-hand coaches drawn up in line. The huge double decked grand stand was simply packed with people, while the betting enclosure and paddock were crowded.”
