To the editor,

We hear the expression, “good luck” over and over – “good luck” sarcastic or believing that in God we trust.

As I was hobbling on foot downtown recently, I reflected on luck, the workings of the universe and the laws of nature. I picked up a penny along the way, and then another.

I arrived at my destination, a bank.

After conducting my business with a teller, I sat on the bench designated for clients to conduct business, searching my phone for numbers. After a few minutes, she said, “Loitering is not allowed here.” I was not idle or sluggish, just taking a little longer.

The use of that word helped me recall an individual, a teenager, outside our storefront office, puffing on a cigarette, and me calling my coworker on his “loitering.” A few minutes later, to my surprise
