The Institute of American Indian Arts would receive zero federal dollars starting in October, if President Donald Trump's 2026 budget is approved by Congress. The tribal college usually receives more than $13.4 million a year through Congressional appropriations.

IAIA President Robert Martin says he learned about the proposed cut on Monday morning, after the president's budget was made public.

The White House "did not even provide a justification for closure," Martin told KOAT.

IAIA serves 800 students and 150 employees. It was founded in 1962 and attracts Indigenous students nationwide.

Martin said he's spoken with members of New Mexico's Congressional delegation and federal officials with the Department of the Interior to push back on the proposed budget cut.
