SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - On Tuesday, Midwest Honor Flight took 85 veterans to Washington, D.C. to show them memorials and monuments to their service and sacrifice.
Leo Thornton, of North Sioux City, served in the Navy during World War II.
He is now 96-years-old, and one of the youngest who went to war. He says he lied about his age to enlist and get in the fight, calling it his ‘sense of duty.’
He had a special moment with a school group which visiting the Iwo Jima Memorial. Many stopped to shake his hand, and listen to a few stories he had to share.
”Well, I guess I am getting used to it, I guess. It was a big surprise today. What I did was very necessary, and it was a turning point in the war, it was because we did win the war,” Thornton said.
