Israel's military announced the recovery of the body of Nattapong Pinta, a Thai national who was abducted during the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. The announcement was made on Saturday by Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, as the country continues its military operations in Gaza, which have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 95 people in the past 24 hours, according to Gaza's health ministry.
Pinta's body was retrieved from the Rafah area in southern Gaza. He was taken hostage from Kibbutz Nir Oz, a small Israeli community near the Gaza border, where many residents were either killed or abducted during the initial assault. The Thai foreign ministry confirmed the recovery of Pinta's body, stating that he was the last Thai hostage confirmed dead, while two other Thai nationals remain unaccounted for.
The Israeli government indicated that Pinta was killed shortly after his abduction. His body was held by the Mujahideen Brigades, a militant group that has also been linked to the abduction and killing of other hostages, including Israeli-American couple Judih Weinstein and Gadi Haggai, whose bodies were recovered just days prior.
The ongoing conflict has seen a significant toll on both sides. Since the October attacks, Hamas militants have killed approximately 1,200 people, primarily civilians, and taken 251 hostages. Currently, 55 hostages are believed to still be held in Gaza, with Israeli officials estimating that more than half of them are dead.
As Israel continues its military offensive, airstrikes have targeted various locations in Gaza, including the Muwasi area and northern Gaza, resulting in civilian casualties. Reports indicate that some of the deceased were attempting to access food aid when they were killed. The Israeli military stated that it is responding to what it describes as Hamas' "barbaric attacks" and is working to dismantle the group's capabilities while claiming to follow international law to minimize civilian harm.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with the United Nations warning that the majority of the 2.3 million residents are at risk of famine due to the ongoing blockade and military actions. Aid distribution has been severely impacted, with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation halting operations due to safety concerns amid the violence.
The conflict has displaced around 90% of Gaza's population, with more than 54,000 Palestinians reported killed since the start of the military campaign. The situation continues to evolve as international efforts to mediate a ceasefire have stalled, leaving families of the remaining hostages in a state of uncertainty and fear.
