Chile was struck by a significant magnitude 6.4 earthquake yesterday. While no injuries were reported, more than 20,000 have been left without power.
On Friday at 1:15 PM local time, an initial 6.7-magnitude earthquake, later downgraded to 6.4 magnitude , rattled Chile. The epicenter of the quake was located off the coast of the Atacama Desert. The earthquake, caused by the tectonic plates shifting in the Pacific Ring of Fire, was found to have a depth of 47 miles.
The quake was so strong that those in neighboring Argentina felt the shaking for up to 20 seconds in some cases.
Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, and no tsunami warning was issued for the South American coastline. Additionally, there was only minor damage to structures near the epicenter of the earthquake.
