PITTSBURGH -- Wanting to give Bryce Harper 's ailing right wrist enough time to fully heal, the Phillies placed the two-time MVP on the injured list prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the Pirates.

To take his place on the active roster, the Phils selected the contract of infielder Otto Kemp , their No. 24 prospect , from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

It was revealed on Friday that Harper -- who missed five games last week after being hit on the right elbow -- has been dealing with a sore wrist for "a while," per manager Rob Thomson. Harper also dealt with pain in his right wrist for much of last season, though he played through it.

The Phillies are hoping that they can prevent the wrist issue from dragging on this time around by giving Harper ample time to rest.
