The deaths of three young girls police believe were killed by their father have left communities throughout Washington grief-stricken and shaken.

Now, some officials are calling to reform state law and the judicial system, including state Rep. Travis Couture, an Allyn (Mason County) Republican who believes the three sisters would still be alive if the court had barred the father from unsupervised visitation.

Couture classified the sisters’ deaths earlier this week as a “massive, heartbreaking failure of Washington’s judicial system.” It’s a problem that’s all too common, he said: “We should change the law.”

Decker, 32, is a veteran who, according to an attorney speaking on behalf of the girls’ mother, had been struggling with deteriorating mental health prior to the sisters’ deaths.
