Victoria’s own Spencer Carbery and head coach of the Washington Capitals has just won the Jack Adams Award, which recognizes one NHL coach each year for the significant contribution to a team’s success.

The NHL announced the news at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

Carbery was surprised this morning by his wife and two kids who helped present the prestigious award.

Spencer grew up playing minor hockey with the Racquet Club Kings and went on to play Junior B in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, and then played in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

The 43-year-old head coach took the Capitals to a 51-22-9 record, winning the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference and second in the NHL.
