HOUSTON (KIAH) — As the school year wraps up, kids are ready for Summer! And for many, that means time to head to the pool, lake, and/or the beach. Sadly, not everyone will get out of the water safely.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, "Every year in the United States there are over 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths.(A)"

With 88% of child drownings occurring while an adult is present, the YMCA of Greater Houston says, "it’s critical to recognize that distractions around water can lead to serious, even fatal, consequences."

To address this issue, the YMCA of Greater Houston is launching a powerful new public service campaign, “Phones Down, Eyes Up,” to remind caregivers to stay alert and undistracted when supervising children near water.
