TYLER, Texas — With the new Smith County Courthouse going up in downtown Tyler and renovations to the square, downtown is going to get a whole lot busier. That's why the Tyler Police Department is expanding its officer presence.

Tyler Police Department Sgt. Chuck Boyce will be in charge of the downtown police beat. Officers spent Friday morning introducing themselves to people out downtown and those working inside some businesses.

"It's very positive. Everybody we've talked to, whether it be people here in the Plaza Tower or people just on the street who've talked to us, have been very happy with the fact that they're going to get officers that are here responsible just for downtown," Tyler Police Department spokesperson Andy Erbaugh said.
