DETROIT -- Alex Cobb has a 0.00 ERA through two rehab starts at High-A West Michigan. His stuff -- especially against players 12 to 15 years younger than he is -- isn’t really a concern.

But anyone watching his second rehab start Friday night could see he lands a bit gingerly after pitches due to ongoing hip issues. Keep watching, and you’ll notice he’s not running to cover first base on grounders to the right side. That’s by design: The Tigers have instructed him to avoid exertion on defense.

It’s not a concern yet. But as his rehab progresses, it will become one.

Cobb returned to Detroit on Saturday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session for coaches in the coming days. If everything checks out, he’ll head back out for a third rehab start.
