PALMER LAKE, Colo. — The mayor of Palmer Lake has resigned following a heated debate over the proposed annexation of land for a Buc-ee's mega gas station.
The controversy intensified after text messages surfaced in a lawsuit, revealing that the now-former mayor referred to opponents of the project as "losers."
Darcy Schoening, a former Colorado GOP staffer, said, "It's small town politics. It's not the gas station that's bringing her behavior to light." Schoening, who resides in nearby Monument, expressed her support for the Buc-ee's project, stating, "I'm 100% in favor of Buc-ee's." She also disclosed her past close relationship with the mayor, saying, "I was best friends with the mayor," emphasizing the word "was."
