Emergency workers, relatives and neighbours desperately searched the rubble of a building hit by an Israeli strike in Gaza City on Saturday, in an attempt to rescue children and other members of the Abu Sharia family.

At least six people, including children, were killed according to Shifa and Al Ahli hospital officials.

One child was rescued alive and carried to paramedics by his father.

The bodies of a boy and girl were also recovered during the search, and placed in ambulances.

Israel’s military later said it killed the head of the Mujahideen Brigades, Asad Aby Sharaiya, in Gaza City on Saturday in the strike in Sabra neighborhood.

At least 95 people have been killed by Israel's offensive in the past 24 hours, according to Gaza's health ministry.

Israel said it was responding to Hamas’ “barbaric attacks” and dismantling its capabilities.

It said it takes all feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm.

Also on Saturday, Israel announced that it had retrieved the body of a Thai hostage abducted into Gaza during the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that sparked the war.

The prime minister’s office said Nattapong Pinta's body was returned to Israel in a special military operation.

Pinta was seized from Kibbutz Nir Oz and killed early in the war, the government said.

Thailand's foreign ministry in a statement confirmed that the last Thai hostage in Gaza was retrieved dead.

It said the bodies of two others are yet to be retrieved.

The war broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251 hostages.

They are still holding 56 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Israeli forces have rescued eight living hostages from Gaza and recovered dozens of bodies.

Since then, Israel has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians in its military campaign, primarily women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its figures.

The offensive has destroyed large parts of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population of roughly 2 million Palestinians.
