The New York Yankees opened a three-game series with a 9-6 win over the Boston Red Sox, but not before receiving an injury scare.

Anthony Volpe powered New York to a victory with one of the team’s three home runs. However, the starting shortstop got hit on the left elbow by a Walker Buehler pitch in his next plate appearance. Volpe stayed in the game to run the bases and play defense in the third inning before later exiting the game.

The Yankees announced that Volpe had a left elbow contusion . Volpe later mitigated any long-term concern about the injury.

Although his elbow felt “painful and stiff” after the incident, Volpe revealed that X-rays came back negative. He doesn’t anticipate missing the rest of the Red Sox series.
