INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Fleas are a year-round problem for pets, and they reproduce quickly making preventing them an essential part of being a pet owner.

Fleas can lay up to 2,000 eggs in their lifetime, and in Indiana, the humidity and temperature allow them to reproduce from egg to adult in just two weeks.

“For every flea you see on your pet, there’s about 100 in your house,” Tom Dock, veterinarian at Noah’s Animal Hospitals, said.

Fleas can transmit diseases, including the plague, which still occurs in the United States each year. Veterinarians recommend keeping pets on parasite prevention year-round and consulting with them for advice on flea and tick prevention.
