A man in a wheelchair died after being struck by a car in New Haven while he riding in the street early Saturday morning.

Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Dixwell Avenue around 3:43 a.m. on Saturday for the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, according to the New Haven Police Department .

Officers located the victim, identified as 50-year-old man from New Haven, in the roadway suffering from injuries, police said.

Personnel from the New Haven Fire Department and American Medical Response rendered medical aid before the man was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

His name was being withheld as police were notifying his family.

Police said the driver remained at the scene.
