East Hollywood — Another group of tenants is banding together as developers set out to raze their aging buildings and construct a larger one in their place.
On May 8, the city's Planning Commission approved a project that would demolish 25 rent-stabilized residences at 5416-5430 W. Carlton Way. In their place would rise an eight-story building with 131 apartments . Seventeen of the residences would be classified as affordable. According to city documents , an existing two-story building with eight units would remain.
While this brings new housing stock to the city, it also means that approximately 50 people will have to pack up their things and go, according to Justin Maurer, a building resident and co-founder of the Carlton Serrano Tenants Association.
