Terry Cook Jr. dies at MUSC Chester after May 6 Kershaw prison assault

KERSHAW, S.C. — Authorities say an inmate has died after being assaulted at a state prison a month earlier.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections confirmed that Terry Wayne Cook Jr. died at MUSC Health Chester Secure Hospital on Thursday following an assault that happened at Kershaw Correctional Institution on May 6.

Prison officials said the death is being investigated as a homicide by the SCDC Inspector General's Office, with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Lancaster County Coroner's Office.

An autopsy is planned.
