In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on a mysterious island, which he believed to be the outskirts of the East Indies; however, it did not take explorers long to realize that Columbus and his crew had discovered a New World. Columbus represented the Spanish crown during this intrepid voyage and the voyages that followed, and other European powers took note, not to be outdone by the formidable Spanish. Eighty-five years after Columbus' famous voyage, in 1577, British explorer Francis Drake set sail from England to circumnavigate the globe, pillage Spanish settlements, and claim new land for the British crown.
