Warming snow in the alpine this time of year brings a higher potential for sink holes, created by weak snow surfaces, something a Campbell River SAR manager has seen firsthand on a hiking trip with friends.

Tim Strange, has been with the Campbell River Search and Rescue (SAR) for 18 years. He’s a member of the rope rescue, mountain rescue, and the long line helicopter rescue team.

This time of year, he tends to give outdoor enthusiasts the standard yet essential ‘stay hydrated’ advice.

However, one scenario that’s unique to high alpine terrain this time of year is the potential for someone to fall through a weak surface structure or into a sink hole.
