Caldwell, Texas (KBTX) -The Burleson County community gathered in downtown Caldwell Thursday to honor a man who spent decades protecting and serving.

Sheriff Gene Hermes was laid to rest after more than 30 years in law enforcement on Friday, leaving behind a legacy of service and big shoes to fill.

“He’s a good man, it was a great loss,” shared lifelong Burleson County resident Victoria Enrique. “It was a horrible loss, and I miss him. I miss him dearly because I’ll miss seeing him down our road.”

The streets were lined with community members, many standing with hands over their hearts, as a line of patrol vehicles escorted Sheriff Hermes through the heart of town.
