BIG RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 77-year-old man was airlifted to the hospital after a car crash near Big Rapids Saturday afternoon, deputies say.

It happened in front of the Meijer on Perry Avenue near US-131 around 1 p.m. The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Department says the 77-year-old man pulled out of the road to Meijer and into the path of a westbound car, causing the crash.

The 77-year-old, from Reed City, was not wearing his seat belt and was thrown from his car, the sheriff’s department said. He was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital with injuries that are considered life-threatening.

Deputies say the 19-year-old from Big Rapids driving the westbound car was checked out at the scene and released.
