DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - Experts say pregnant people may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
Research shows extreme heat can increase the risk of babies being born too early.
Other risks include high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, hospitalizations, and even maternal death.
Studies show some groups are more at risk than others.
“We can actually see that some subgroups are particularly vulnerable—younger women, women with less educational attainment, and women who are living in areas of more poverty, for example,” said Dr. Lyndsey Darrow, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors during peak heat, and having access to air conditioning can help lower the risk.
