ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

The Sandia Peak Tramway is helping to raise money to build a deluxe K-9 training track near Dan Webster Memorial Park.

The "Rides for Rebel" campaign is named for the first Albuquerque Police Department K-9 to be killed in the line of duty.

Rebel served the APD for more than five years alongside officer Chris Brito, with whom he was involved in more than 900 deployments, saved lives and put himself in harm's way. He was the first APD K-9 officer to die in the line of duty during a Special Weapons and Tactics situation, in which the suspect was holding a gun and threatening officers.

"We understand it was a situation of friendly fire, and that happens sometimes," said Mayor Tim Keller. "A terrible thing, for any loss of life."
