A man died Saturday, June 7 after a welfare check turned into an officer-involved shooting outside a Walmart on South Georgia Street.
Amarillo police officers were called around 11:38 a.m. to the store at 4215 S. Georgia St. after employees reported a man appeared to be unresponsive inside a parked vehicle.
A welfare check is typically conducted when someone is believed to be in distress, unresponsive, or at risk of harm.
Police said they found one man, later identified as 41-year-old Justin Lee Crouch, inside the car. As officers attempted to speak with him, they saw a firearm in the vehicle and stepped back. A shot was then fired from within the vehicle, prompting one officer to discharge their weapon, according to the department.
Crouch was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers
