JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A road in Jefferson County remains closed after a major leak detected on the Sipsey raw water main.

The Birmingham Water Works got a call around 5 a.m. Saturday, June 7 about a leak in the 1500 block of Brookside Coalburg Road near Mount Olive. The road was closed as a result.

Crews determined there is a leak on a 60-inch raw water main that brings water from the Sipsey intake near Smith Lake to the Western Filter Plant. There was no interruption to water service.

Engineers have rerouted water away from the site of the break.

Crews are excavating the site and will begin assessing repair options.
