The Albuquerque Police Department has been steadily increasing the number of its female officers, and for the past three years, its "Women in Blue" events have helped a lot.

Right now, women comprise about 18% of the police force, said APD spokesperson Jennifer Garcia.

"You know, it's great to see other women who want to follow in our footsteps, who want to commit to a job we hold so near and dear to our heart and take the reins when we move on," Garcia said.

The event at the APD Academy on Second Street Northwest includes having the women try some of the obstacle course tests aspiring officers have to pass on the way to graduating, along with a group run and physical fitness activities. Those who were not ready to join the workout were given information on physical fitness preparation.
