COLUMBUS – The final day of the Division I state track and field meet involved mixed emotions for some of the area’s top competitors.

Maumee senior Lucas Polkinghorn came agonizingly close to winning the boys high jump but still left with two finishes on the state podium.

The St. John’s boys 1,600 relay team came in hopeful that it could leave with a state championship, but an injury kept that from occurring.

For Whitmer senior Azurie Garrett, she improved her time in the girls 300 hurdles after finishing runner-up a year ago, but ended up third this time.

Overall, nine area individuals and one area relay reached the podium.
