During Pioneer’s 170-mile trip to take on Corcoran for Saturday’s CIF State Southern California Division V Regional championship game, some seniors were still getting rest on the long bus ride after celebrating grad night on Friday.

Just imagine how great the ride home was, especially after a hold-your-breath finish.

Pioneer senior pitcher Cristian Maciel threw a two-hit shutout through five innings, then turned it over to fellow senior Ethan Islas, who fought his way out of a nerve-racking sixth inning, then held on for dear life in the seventh inning with Corcoran nearly rallying all the way back.

But Islas and Pioneer held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory over top-seed Corcoran (27-5) to claim the Division V regional title, handing Corcoran just its fifth loss of the season.
