After shutting out Washington 4-0 in the state championship game, receiving their championship medals, and posing for pictures, there was only one more thing that needed to be done.
Jefferson senior pitcher Whitney Portner, alongside a couple of her teammates, rushed to the SDHSAA tournament bracket to smash their logo onto the state champion's section of the board. Portner’s eyes filled with tears as her teammates screamed their lungs out in celebration.
“It's amazing. It's a really good feeling,” Portner said of her emotions following the state championship win. “I don't know how else to put it, and I'm just so happy I got to do it with all my teammates here.”
