One woman who reportedly experienced and witnessed abuse at a now-defunct youth reform school in LaVerkin is speaking out for change and justice.
“It (was) a behavior modification school program,” Allie Carroll said about Horizon Academy. “It was advertised to parents as ‘fix your kid. Get your kid on the right path.’ But it was so much darker than that.”
Carroll, a former Hurricane resident who now resides in Hudson, New York, said her life took a turn when she was 14. She had started sneaking out, spending time with her boyfriend and eventually trying marijuana. Due to her behavior, her parents ultimately sent her to the academy in 2012.
