The lead 'fixer' overseeing crisis-hit Birmingham City Council after its near-bankruptcy has collected fees and expenses of more than £300,000 for his part time role - with the bill footed by Brummies.

Max Caller, the London-based lead commissioner brought in under the Conservatives to take charge at the ailing council, is on £1,200-a-day plus expenses. In 18 months he has collected £302,264.

Along with six other commissioners, the bill for their input is now touching £2 million.
